I formed them by hand, fired them, painted underglaze into a stencil I made from a fern leaf in my yard, glazed, and fired again to 2223 F. Once they were finished, I sanded the bottoms so they are smooth. The glaze is food-safe, and even un-glazed portions are non-porous.
